Although the summer months in Barbados are the off-season, it is still an excellent time to visit the island. You can enjoy lower accommodation rates and escape the crowds. Here are four popular events to show you that this summer in Barbados should not be missed!

  1. Sol Rally Barbados – Friday to Sunday, June 2-4, 2017

The countdown is on to the Caribbean rally car event of the year. Guests will have unrivalled access to drivers and their crews, allowing you to get up close and personal. Barbados Rally Club will hold the 27th anniversary of the International All-Stage Rally, with representatives from around 30 countries. Sol Rally features lightweight special vehicles as well as full world rally cars. This exciting spectator experience provides a valuable boost to the economy during a traditionally quiet tourism period. This means it’s a great time to visit! Although the main event spans three days, it commences the weekend prior with the King of Hill Sprint and motorsport festival.

  1. Kadooment Day – Monday August 7, 2017

This Bajan public holiday is a joyous celebration and cultural day. The Grand Kadooment marks the finale of the Crop Over Festival of Summer which attracts visitors from all over the world, with many Barbadians returning home for the event. This day marks the end of the sugar cane harvest. The street carnival and parade to calypso and soca music are a glorious visual and aural spectacle, traveling from the National Stadium to the Spring Garden. It is a modern version of the ancient African historical tradition of masquerading as well as giving crops to the Gods as an offering.

  1. Carifesta XIII – August 17-27, 2017

The 13th edition of this Caribbean and Latin American event is being hosted by Barbados and will encompass the theme “asserting our culture, celebrating ourselves”. This festival of arts and culture includes an array of interesting events. The grand market and shopping hall feature daily fashion shows, as well as a shopping experience of local and regional entrepreneurs’ wares in the areas of art, craft and fashion. Country nights showcase live performances from select countries in the region. The most popular events are the two super concerts which showcase the diversity of music traditions, both regional oral traditions and popular rhythms.

  1. Horseracing, June to August, 2017

Summer marks season two of horseracing with the Barbados Turf Club at the Garrison Savannah in Bridgetown. Horse racing has been held in this historic location since 1845. Each afternoon of horseracing features nine exciting races. Entrance to the grandstand is affordable and provides an incredible view of the finish line. It’s an activity you can enjoy alongside the locals and with your whole family. Day 7 is likely to be the most exciting as it is Massy United Insurance Derby Race Day, also the Third Jewel in the Barbados Triple Crown. This is one of the most important annual horse racing events in Barbados. The summer dates for horseracing are:

June 24, 2017 – Day 4

July 01, 2017 – Day 5

July 15, 2017 – Day 6

August 1, 2017 – Day 7

August 12, 2017 – Day 8

August 26, 2017 – Day 9 (final race day of the season)
